Feasibility of the reaction

Question

Given:

!!I_2+2e^(-) -> 2I^-!! !!E^0=0.54V!!

!!Fe^(+3)+e^(-) -> Fe^(+2)!! !!E^0=0.77V!!

Is it true that !!Fe^(2+)!! is oxidized by iodine?

Solution

Pretty straight forward question, which nearly every one got right.

For the reaction !!2Fe^(2+)+I_2->2Fe^(3+)+2I^-!!

!!E^0=-1.54+0.54 =-1!!

Sinc !!E^0!! is negative the reaction is not possible.
