Concept of HCl and HBr

Question

When any chloride is heated with conc. !!H_2SO_4!!, then !!HCl!! is obtained
While any bromide is heated with conc. !!H_2SO_4!!, then !!Br_2!! is obtained and not !!HBr!!.

a) !!HCl!! is gas while !!HBr!! is a liquid

b) !!HCl!! is a liquid while !!HBr!! is a gas

c) !!HBr!! is a stronger reducing agent than !!HCl!!

d) !!Br_2!! is a liquid and !!HCl!! is a gas.

Solution

Bromide is more strongly reducing. In the presence of!!H_2SO_4!! it will be reducing agent and reduce the sulphur atom.

Chloride can't reduce because chloride is not a strong agent to have reduction effect on !!H_2SO_4!!.

Therefore, option (c) is correct.
