As evident from the analysis of previous year papers, Aldehydes and Ketones is one of the most important topics for both JEE Mains and Advanced. The chapter is very conceptual and covers a lot of topics. JEE Advanced gives a lot of weightage to this chapter in its organic chemistry section every year.


In JEE Mains, many questions are asked for the preparation of Aldehydes and Ketones by ozonolysis of alkenes. This chapter is all about Nucleophilic Addition reactions. Questions are asked from Grignard reagent, HCN and its derivatives addition. Tischenko, Wolf-Kishner and Gattermann reaction are important for JEE Mains. Aldol Condensation, Cannizzaro reaction, Perkin reaction are very important for JEE Advanced. Haloform Reaction (especially Iodoform raction) needs special emphasis. JEE Advanced asks questions from beta-keto acids, dil NaBH4 reactions and its uses also. The questions relating to Aldol Condensation, Cannizzaro are mechanism based in both the exams, so they need proper understanding. For scoring maximum marks, one needs sufficient amount of practise for this particular chapter also.
